The past two months have been productive for the Nestables team, with quite a lot of code work being done behind the scenes that didn’t lend itself to being showcased in a development update for November. Instead, you get two development updates in one! We hope you have a wonderful Christmas, holiday and new year period with family and friends.

Development Progress

Resource Balloons

Over the past two months, work has been done on implementing a “resource balloon” system. These balloons will allow for an interactive and fun way for new recipes, special items etc to be dropped off into the Nest. They will spawn at random intervals and if you want to find out what is inside them, then you must task your Nestables with shooting them down!

So, how do you shoot down a resource balloon? With a slingshot of course!

All of the base coding for this gameplay element is now complete and the implementation of the assets (pictured above) will be done in January.

Item Placement Improvements

For those of you who tested out the Alpha for Nestables, you would have seen that a lot more work was needed on improving the placement of decorations and tools around the Nest. Progress on improving this system has been done over the past couple of months to give significanly better customisation options, something that has always been a core focus for Nestables. You will see in the image below, the placement of the fence around the farming area has been done on base blocks that are also being utilised for other purposes, such as the wood chopping station.

The same is also applicable for many of the interactable objects ingame that you will use. All of this is designed to add more flexibility to the game for easier use.

Building Editor Refinements

The building editor has always been designed to be a key part of Nestables’ gameplay. We have continued to refine the editor, with the intention of making it easier to use, improving UI and allowing for additional customisation. This month, that work has focused on:

  1. Changes to the Save Blueprint UI
  2. The building UI will rescale nicely depending on screen size
  3. Added a Help Guide UI — Currently includes help on controls and blueprints
  4. Fix for moving objects out of UI + other general bug fixes

Bug Fixes / Other Development Progress

Like other months, we have continued to squash bugs and balance gameplay over the course of the month. Some of the main ones include:

  • Fixed issues with wearables not being saved correctly and then appearing to be only black
  • Progress timers added for harvesting and planting
  • Improved Nestable AI in several areas, including cooking and smelting

We are excited to keep you as a community informed of our development progress. Until the next post, you can stay tuned with our progress via our Telegram & Twitter and don’t forget to clap if you have liked what you have read above!
